(Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers, Catalytic Hydrogenation/Dehydrogenation Loops & Green H2 Logistics).
Operational Chemical Loops & Carbon Sinks
- 01. Catalytic Hydrogenation & Loading: Green hydrogen from water electrolyzers reacted with lean carrier (H0-DBT) at 140-180°C and 30-50 bar. Stores ~6.2 wt% H2 with exothermic heat recovery. (Process Flow: Electrolyzer H2 (30 bar) -> Trickle-Bed Reactor -> Ru/Al2O3 Catalyst Bed -> Liquid H18-DBT -> Ambient Bulk Tanks)
- 02. Ambient Fleet Logistics & Bunkering: Transport of fully hydrogenated carrier (H18-DBT) at room temperature and 1 atm using standard IMO Type II chemical tankers and railcars with zero boil-off loss. (Process Flow: Port Marine Loading Arm -> Handysize Chemical Tanker -> Oceanic Transit (Ambient 1 atm) -> Offload Terminal Buffer)
- 03. Endothermic Dehydrogenation & Release: Endothermic dehydrogenation of H18-DBT at 280-320°C over Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. Releases pure hydrogen for fuel cells via PSA, recovering lean H0-DBT for return cycling. (Process Flow: Liquid H18-DBT Feed -> Microchannel Reactor (Pt/Al2O3, 300°C) -> PSA Separator -> ISO 14687 Grade D H2 -> Lean H0-DBT Recycle)
- 04. Biogenic Carbon Removal (BECCS/BiCRS): Capture of point-source biogenic CO2 from biomass plants, dense-phase supercritical liquefaction at 100+ bar, isotopic 14C verification, and permanent basalt/saline mineralization. (Process Flow: Biomass Flue Gas -> Piperazine Amine Scrubber -> Supercritical Compression (120 bar) -> Deep Saline Aquifer Mineralization)
Process Engineering Layers & Safety Envelopes
- Layer 1: Exothermic Catalytic Hydrogenation & Upstream Ingress: Multi-tubular trickle-bed reactors packing ruthenium on gamma-alumina catalysts (Ru/Al2O3). Hydrogenates lean aromatic carrier molecules up to 99.4% saturation degree with active heat integration.
- Layer 2: Ambient Liquid Logistics, Chemical Tankers & Intermodal Terminals: Liquid carrier storage utilizing standard atmospheric carbon-steel and stainless-steel tanks. Compatible with conventional bunkering arms, ISO tank railcars, and IMO Type II chemical tankers without cryogenic insulation.
- Layer 3: Endothermic Release, Catalyst Bed & Pressure Swing Adsorption: Microchannel and shell-and-tube reactors packing platinum catalysts (Pt/Al2O3). Industrial waste heat or fuel cell thermal exhaust supplies 65 kJ/mol H2 endothermic enthalpy, releasing high-purity hydrogen.
- Layer 4: Biogenic Carbon Dioxide Removal (BECCS/BiCRS) & CRCF Compliance: Point-source carbon capture from biogenic flue streams using advanced amine and enzymatic absorbents. Supercritical dense-phase pipeline transport and verified mineralization in basalt or deep saline aquifers under EU CRCF.
Process Telemetry Benchmarks: 6.2 wt% (H2 Storage Capacity) | 0.00% (Boil-Off Evaporation) | 99.997% (Delivery H2 Purity) | > 1,000 Yrs (CDR Permanence)
